Advances in LED component design have brought about the creation of higher CRI LEDs that push light quality to a whole new level. These higher performance LEDs allow solid state lighting to compete with existing incumbent retail lighting technologies in terms of both light output and colour quality; enabling retailers to take advantage of the intrinsic energy efficiency and long life characteristics of LED technology to reduce energy use and minimise lighting maintenance.

Retail lighting, and in particular retail shelf lighting, has been traditionally dominated by fluorescent light fixtures that give a smooth, continuous illumination across the width of the shelf. With LED technology this necessitates the use of optical design to replicate the desirable look of a fluorescent, however this can be successfully overcome with astonishing results.

A successful LED solution for retail shelf lighting must also take into account the environment in which the product operates. The luminaire needs to be physically robust, and ensure sufficient thermal management to effectively cool the LEDs to maintain long-life.
