Forge Europa's Partnership with Cambridge University at Forefront of LED Technology
Ulverston based Forge Europa is a major independent company specialising in the design, development and manufacture of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps, displays and assemblies.

Forge Europa's outstanding reputation for cutting edge research was very much validated by Cambridge University selecting Forge Europa earlier this year as its industrial partner in a three year research project into developing even better blue and white LEDs. The joint three year research programme aims to improve the efficiency and longevity of white LEDs.

The research project received Government backing in spite of stiff competition from over forty other business and university link proposals. The research is unique in the UK because no other major UK company is active in this field. The recent Government White Paper on Energy (February 2003) states that The British Government believes that when LEDs can be used to replace incandescent lighting successfully, this will result in massive cuts in the amount of energy used by lighting in domestic dwellings.
Potentially this will reduce the world consumption of electricity by 100TWh per year, at a value of $100 billion. This explains why so much effort is being put into development in the US, Japan and Europe. Forge Europa's partnership with Cambridge University is therefore all the more vital in ensuring that the UK gains part of this market.

Julie Barton, Operations Director at Forge Europa said, "This research work is of great importance to the environment. LEDs really do represent the environmentally friendly way forward, because they can be powered by as little as 10% of the energy required by typical incandescent light bulbs, whilst lasting potentially up to 100 times longer. LEDs contain no mercury, give out minimal amounts of heat and due to their long life there is less environmental waste."

Peter Barton now chairs this research work at Cambridge working closely with the world renowned Prof Colin Humphreys. This fact did not go unnoticed by The Financial Times who were keen to report on this prestigious and exciting work recently (26th August 2003).
